About This Website:
Julianduron.com features both my art and the other creative endeavors that make my life whole. I am pleased to be able to say these areas overlap significantly. My art is presented here in an online gallery designed to highlight the evolution of the elements that make all fine art compelling: composition, execution, color, technique, and incorporation of technology. For this reason, the gallery features both works now in private collections and works that are currently available.
Bio:
I have lived my adult life in Seattle, and New York City. These cities each have vibrant art communities supported by discriminating collectors. They share a sense of community that fosters the development of creativity – in art, music, film, and dance. They also offer the elements of everyday life that I find vital to my own well-being: unlimited surfaces to exhibit work, fine coffee, strong web communities, creative computer subcultures, and cycling communities, to name a few.
In 2006, while still in Seattle, I created a well-received webzine called vivivi that served both as a portal for emerging artists and as a source of information related to art, music, design, and popular culture in the Pacific Northwest. Its successor webzine here in New York City has been equally well received and is appropriately named Coattails. This site features emerging music, music videos, photography, comedy, and other popular media and received between 4500 - 5000 visits per day.
Statement:
There is no such thing as a freestanding work of art. Each work is bracketed by: 1) everything that came before it, and 2) the next blank canvas. Between the two is the grand gulf that excites artists and collectors alike. My paintings emerge almost exclusively from the natural environment. Textures – organic, synthetic, and imaginary – are an important part of the composition, and are natural outgrowths of the subject matter.
I employ painting techniques that have evolved in response, primarily, to my need to render accurately what my mind’s eye offers up. I am heavily influenced by places I have lived, places I have visited, and remarkable people I have met along the way. However, my mind’s eye has a mind of its own. It speaks its own language as well. I am occasionally called upon to translate -- a process that fascinates me.
The landscapes and related works found on this site reflect aggregate influences. My older work incorporated more stylized, simplistic composition and minimal use of color. More recently, I have been inclined to use more complex palettes and more complex subject matter.
In addition to painting, I have constantly experimented with other media: sculpture, drawings, vector art, and photography. Selected examples of these efforts can be found on this site as well.
